About eyesight

Vision problems (ametropia) and their correction
In absence of vision problems, the image of the observed object is formed directly on the retina. The situation of nitid vision which demands no correction is called emmetropia, which means excellent visual acuity and normal fields of vision.

Most common vision problems

The term “ametropia” refers to the situation when the image of the observed object is not formed in the correct form at the level of retina. It refers to a non-pathological problem of vision or, more precisely, the vision error or anomaly. Ametropia causes blurred vision which demands optical correction. There are three types of situations:
• myopia
• hyperopia or hypermetropia
• astigmatism.

Presbyopia is an inevitable situation after 40 years of age. It is caused by natural ageing of eye lens which gradually looses its flexibilty which therefore results in blurred or disturbed vision on near distances and/or tiredness when reading or working on close distances (computer). The tiredness can be manifested as headache, forced tearing, uncomfort when observing close objects, photophobia (the sensibility or intolerance to light).

These problems are most common ones but there are also others such as amblyopia, strabismus and hypovision.

How are vision problems corrected?

For a perfect eyesight, the visual correction helps to obtain the clear vision at the retinal level. The most common way to correct an ametropia is to wear corrective prescription eyeglasses. The choice of correct frame is, beside the aesthetics, also limited by the prescription of the patient.

The second solution is contact lens' wear. The new technologies of geometry and material fabrication are enabling the correction of astigmatism via contact lenses and correction of ametropia with contact lenses even with patients which have inadequate tear quality.

Finally, one of the ways to correct vision problems is refractive surgery which is indicated in some cases.

Also known as “near-sightedness”.

Myopia is an optical defect caused by “excessive” length between cornea and retina in relation to the eyes refractive power. In this condion the image is formed before retina which causes myopes to have unclear distant vision. The higher the degree of myopia, the closer is the distance of patients clear vision.

Myopia can be corrected by concave (negative) lenses – the lenses that are thin in the center and thick at the edges. They are designed to move the focus of the image back to retina and therefore ensure correct vision.

The higher the diopters, thicker the lenses at the edges which is unattractive and uncomfortable and also reduces the possibilty of options for the corrective frame.

For higher powers we recommend high index lenses which have reduced edge thickness. This solution contributes to the aesthetics of the glasses, reduces their weight and provides perfect vision.

Frequent solution for myopes as a supplemental or alternative option is given by soft or hard (rgp) contact lenses, also available for astigmatic patients. Their selection is limited by the type or quantity of ametropia (vision problem), the quality of eye tears and also by desires of the patient.

For presbyopes with myopia who demand clear vision on all distances we recommend progressive lenses (ophtalmic and contact). They correct myopia and provide clear vision on different distances: close, distant and intermediate.

Also called “far-sightedness”.

The cause of hyperopia is "short eye", or, more precisely, the fact that the distance between cornea and retina is shorter than the focal of the eyes refractive power. Therefore, the image is formed behind the retina. That means that hyperopes often see distant objects better than those located close to the eyes. Patient can obtain clear vision by forcing the eyes accomodative power which can lead to tiredness and tension.

Hyperopia is corrected with convergent lenses which are thick in the center and thin at the edges. These lenses are called positive lenses. They are designed to move the image back to the retina and therefore improve the distance or near vision, based on the entity of hyperopia.

The higher the diopter, the corrective lenses are thicker in the center and also heavier.

As a solution for hyperopia, we recommend the use of aspheric geometries for lenses as well as hi-index lenses for higher diopters. These lenses are flatter, lighter and thinner in the center. Also, it is important to choose an adequate frame which will visually “hide” the lens thickness and make your glasses lighter and more comfortable to wear. The days of thich and heavy lenses are gone – you will wear your glasses with satisfaction.

For hyperopes and presbyopes we recommend progressive or office lenses (combined near and intermediate correction). They correct hyperopia and allow all activities by providing perfect vision on all distances.

Astigmatism is an optical defect mostly caused by the irregular curvature of cornea and/or lens. Therefore the shape of cornea is more toric and less spheric.

The patients with astigmatism have unprecise near and distant vision. Their peripheric vision is not clear and they are not able to tell the shapes or details and/or can not perceive the contrast between horizontal, vertical or curved lines. The astigmatism of +/-0.50 dpt can be a cause of frequent headaches, eye tearing and tiredness and the patient can still have sharp vision.

Astigmatism can be combined with other vision problems such as myopia, hyperopia and presbyopia.

It is common with children and can have negative effect on success in school because it can cause confusion between numbers and letters.

Astigmatism is corrected with toric/cylindric lenses (lenses that have different curvatures and edge thickness). These lenses are designed to compensate the “defect” of the cornea and to correct the axis of astigmatism. The higher the astigmatism, the higher the difference between the thickness of the lens edges.

Solutions for astigmatism

As a solution for astigmatism, Oculto recommends light and flat corrective ophtalmic lenses. The days of heavy lenses are gone – you will wear your glasses with satisfaction.

For weak and medium astigmatism:
• 1.5 index lenses
• 1.56 index lenses
• 1.6 ashperic lenses

For high astigmatism:
• 1.67 aspheric hi index lenses

For astigmatics with presbyopia:

The best solution for your problem are progressive lenses. They correct the astigmatism and allow the clear vision an all distances.

Presbyopia is not a true anomaly of vision but rather a natural, physiological process of "ageing" of the eyes. During time the eye lens looses its elasticity and therefore the ability to change its curvature and refractive power which causes discomfort when focusing near distance objects. The effect of this change can generally be felt after 40 years of age and depends on different factors (genetics, the presence of anomalies of vision, profession, lifestyle). Like camera out of focus, the eye can not focus objects correctly. For emmetropic presbyopes (persons who do not have distance vision problems) or ametropic presbyopes who have their distance vision corrected the problem of near vision appears and it needs to be corrected by wearing appropriate corrective lenses.

Solutions for presbyopia

The progressive lenses are optimal solution for presbyopia. Varilux lenses are designed to bring clear vision on all distances without changing the glasses. The upper part of the lens is designed for distance vision, the central part corrects the mid-distance and the lower part serves for near vision.

Besides the progressive lenses, it is possbile to correct both distances (far and near) by wearing bifocal lenses or single vision lenses through separate pairs of eyeglasses.

Childrens health is the most precious treasure of every parent. Do we take enough care, are we taking all the aspects into consideration?

Based on ophalmologists experience we can give following advice for good health of young patients:
• First eye exam with the ophtalmologist is recommended before 3 years of age,
• If there is high coincidence of myopia or hyperopia, diabetes or hereditary eye pathologies in the family, exam with the ophtalmologist is highly recommended.

Since the first years of life are extremely important for healthy eyesight development, the parents have big responsibility for the protection of eye health of their children. By correct and timed diagnosis it is possible to treat correctly and with good prediction many eyesight problems and therefore avoid eyeglasses wear in mature years or even more so avoid more complex problems.

If we are urging our children to wear eyeglasses they dont like (due to thick or heavy lenses or incorrect frame) or if they dont see well with them, the children will perceive wearing glasses as a trauma instead as a solution to their vision problems.

This way your child can play undisturbed and relaxed because he/she does not need to worry about eye health issues any more.

Besides safety of the lens and adequate choice of material we should not neglect the necessary protection of lens surface. This way the glasses of your child will be resistant to dirt, scratches, water, dust, reflection and easier to clean. That is why we recommend multilayer antireflex coating as well as antiscratch coating and antifog coating.

The wearing of corrective prescription eyeglasses used to be considered a handicap and difficulty, due to a lack of vast and aesthetically pleasing selection of precription frames. As time passed, the idea of importance of glasses has changed and gained recognition for two reasons: glasses are irreplaceable work tool for those who need them but also an accessoire that serves as expression of style and fashion. It is no coincidence that all important fashion designers of our days have already created a collection of prescription frames and sunglasses. Wearing glasses nowadays is trendy and hip and by no means a limitation. They are worn to see but also to be seen!

Glamorous, mysterious, irresistible and always in focus – the sunglasses! Besides being an inevitable fashion accesoire which enriches your appearance and expresses your style, nowadays sunglasses are more than just a shade of glance: the currently damaged ozone layer is no longer an adequate shield against harmful UV- rays and our eyes require additional protection. Without protective sunglasses, the eye tissue is risking a dangerous and permanent damage. The protection has never been so attractive and cool as today!

For those persons who have difficulty to accept the fact they need to wear a vision correction or for those active, dynamic persons whose activities are limited by wearing prescription frames, the correction of visual anomaly by wearing contact lenses represents the best solution. High-tech, biocompatible materials used for production of contact lenses and liquids today ensure maximum in terms of eye health and offers a benefit of ultimate comfort and practicality to a wearer. Combine them with aesthetics and you get an eyesight that does not accept limitations!
